TEach Us to Pray

A GOHOP internship in Prayer.

Prayer is an essential practice in the Christian life. It is central to knowing God and following Christ.  We know God by being in relationship with Him, by talking to him and listening to wants to say to us.

Jesus modelled prayer for us. The gospel writers tell us that Jesus frequently withdrew from the crowds to be alone with the Father.  Paul exhorts us to “pray continually” (1 Thes. 5: 17). Elsewhere he says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Phil. 4: 5).  Leonard Ravenhill put it well when his said that no Christian is greater than his/her prayer life.  Wesley boldly asserts that God does nothing but in response to our prayer.

Yet it is the experience of many (if not most) Christians that prayer is difficult, dry, boring fruitless and infrequent. Many Christians earnestly desire a better prayer life but yet they can’t seem to get there.  Attempts to establish a robust prayer-life are made. The the results are the same: distraction… boredom… busyness. Our good intentions often come to nothing.  Though this certainly is not everyone’s experience, it seems more common than not.

Lord, Teach Us To Pray is a learning cohort that marries practice and study in order to help participants take real and lasting steps forward in prayer.
