The Path: Finding Wisdom in the Wilderness

An 8-Week Journey into the Wisdom of the Desert Fathers and Mothers

Are you tired of the noise? Do you feel the constant pull of distraction, internal anxiety, and a hurried life?

You aren't the first to feel this way. In the fourth century, thousands of men and women fled the chaos of the empire and ventured into the Egyptian desert. They weren't escaping reality; they were looking for it. They became known as the Desert Fathers and Mothers, and they discovered a practical, psychological, and deeply spiritual map for finding inner peace and communion with God.

This autumn, we invite you to join us on The Path.

What is This Course?

This is not a dry history class. It is an interactive, 8-week spiritual laboratory. Each week, we will explore a core concept of desert spirituality, learn from an ancient "desert friend," engage in honest community discussion, and apply an ancient spiritual discipline in our modern lives.

The Course Companion & Resources

To help you fully immerse yourself in this journey, every participant will receive and engage with three core components:

1. The Participant's Guide: This is your weekly companion text. Each chapter

  • breaks down the weekly theme,

  • provides historical examples from the desert fathers and mothers,

  • unpacks an anchoring Bible passage,

  • includes reflection questions,

  • and features a personal self-assessment tool to foster your spiritual growth.

2. Our Devotional Foundation: Throughout the eight weeks, we will be exploring John Climacus’ spiritual classic, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, written in the 6th and 7th centuries. We have updated and simplified this ancient devotional treasure to make it more accessible to readers today. Its timeless teaching will serve as our devotional map, guiding us step-by-step into spiritual strength and maturity.

3. A Companion Book of Your Choice: To personalize your journey, each student will select and read one additional book on the desert tradition. Recommendations include:

  • Streams in the Wilderness by Andrew Arndt

  • The Wisdom of the Desert by Thomas Merton

  • The Way of the Heart by Henri Nouwen

  • Sayings of the Desert Fathers translated by Benedicta Ward
